Scientific questions:

  • How serious is the change in permafrost at present?

  • How does the population perceive the permafrost shift today?

  • What is the evolution of permafrost landscapes in the past, and is it possible in the future?

The change in permafrost is becoming large-scale today. The anthropogenic impact is a catalyst for changes in climate warming conditions. Currently, these changes are confirmed by monitoring observations, which are expanding every year (Romanovsky et al., 2010; Biskaborn et al., 2019).

What do we have to predict the future of permafrost landscapes today, and what is missing? Permafrost modelling data do not support available paleogeographic landscape models. Research is underway in this direction. The alternation of cryo- and thermochrons in the permafrost zone (Fotiev, 2006, 2009) can serve as a basis for studying the evolution of permafrost landscapes. The conditions of Holocene thermochrons can be the basis for determining the response of permafrost landscapes to the current climate warming. It is, in turn, could become the basis for studying the transformation of the entire environment in the cryolithozone of Eastern Siberia.
